Grammar: PRESENT PERFECT TENSE (Talking about experiences)
In this unit, we will use the Present Perfect Tense to talk about past experiences. The rule for this tense is to use the auxiliary verb “have/has” and the third form (V3) of the main verb. Specifically, we will focus on the phrase “Have you ever…?”
What does “Have you ever…?” mean and when is it used?
We use “Have you ever…?” to ask about things someone has done in their life. It translates to “Have you ever done this in your life?” or “Did you ever do that in your life?” This phrase allows you to ask someone if they have ever, at any point up to now, performed a specific action. Examples will make this clearer.
Structure:
- Positive: Subject + have/has + V3.
- Negative: Subject + haven’t/hasn’t + V3.
- Question: Have/Has + Subject + V3?
Examples:
- Have you ever been to İstanbul? (Sen hiç İstanbul’da bulundun mu?)
- Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t.
- Have you ever seen a historic place? (Sen hiç tarihi bir yer gördün mü?)
- Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t.
- Have you ever stayed in a tent? (Sen hiç çadırda kaldın mı?)
- Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t.
- Have you ever met a famous person? (Sen hiç ünlü biriyle tanıştın mı?)
- Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t.
Giving Explanations / Reasons
When expressing opinions or giving reasons, you can use these common phrases:
- I think…
- I guess…
- I suppose…
- I believe…
- In my opinion,…
- To me,…
Examples:
- I think it is fascinating. (Büyüleyici olduğunu düşünüyorum ya da bence o büyüleyici.)
- I guess Rize is greener than Muğla. (Rize’nin Muğla’dan daha yeşil olduğunu tahmin ediyorum ya da sanırım Rize Muğla’dan daha yeşil.)
- In my opinion, you can have more fun there. (Bence/benim fikrim; sen orada daha çok eğlenirsin.)
